SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

Shockwave Therapy Ottawa

Shockwave Therapy + Active Release Techniques

Sometimes the painful spot isn’t the whole story.

I’ve been using Shockwave Therapy in my Ottawa practice since 2010. Over the years, it has become an important part of how I treat stubborn tendon and soft-tissue injuries. I don’t believe in simply putting a shockwave machine on the spot that hurts. I want to know why it hurts.

That’s where my experience with Active Release Techniques (ART) comes in. With more than 25 years as an RMT and over 24 years using ART, I look at how the muscles, tendons and surrounding tissues are moving and functioning before deciding where Shockwave fits into your treatment.

Why I Combine Shockwave with ART

If your Achilles hurts, for example, I don’t just look at your Achilles. I will assess your calf, foot mobility and surrounding soft tissue to see what may be contributing to the problem. ART allows me to identify and treat soft-tissue restrictions. Shockwave gives me another tool for treating stubborn, painful tissue when appropriate. Not everyone needs both. Your treatment depends on what I find during your assessment.

What Can Shockwave Be Used For?

Shockwave Therapy is commonly used for persistent tendon and soft-tissue problems, including:

  • Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
  • Achilles tendon problems
  • Tennis and golfer’s elbow
  • Patellar tendon problems
  • Shoulder and rotator cuff issues
  • Other stubborn overuse injuries

I treat a lot of runners, cyclists and active people, but you certainly don’t need to be an athlete. Whether you want to run, ride, walk, garden or simply move without constantly thinking about your injury, the goal is to get you back to doing what you love.

What Does Shockwave Feel Like?

Shockwave treatment is relatively short and can feel uncomfortable over a sensitive area. The intensity can be adjusted depending on what we’re treating and how you respond. More isn’t necessarily better. The goal is appropriate treatment, not seeing how much discomfort you can tolerate.

Is Shockwave Right for You?

Maybe—and that’s why I prefer to assess you first. If ART alone makes more sense, I’ll tell you. If adding Shockwave is appropriate, we’ll use it. And if I don’t think what I offer is right for your problem, I’ll tell you that too.

After more than 25 years of treating injuries, I believe knowing when not to use a treatment is just as important as knowing how to use it.

Let’s figure out what’s keeping you from doing what you love.
