As the popularity of endurance sports increases, so does the occurrence of cumulative trauma disorders (better known as over-use injuries). In order to resume training as quickly as possible important decisions need to be made as to what type of treatment would be most effective to treat the injury. Most athletes’ number one concern is loss of training and subsequent fitness. Active Release Technique® is a soft tissue management system that has been proven to minimize recovery time from many common injuries.

What is Active Release Technique® (ART)?
ART is a patented, state-of-the-art soft tissue system that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Damage to these soft tissues triggers the body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue build-up and adhesions inhibit independent, free movement of the soft tissues. When the movement of soft tissues becomes altered, nerves may become entrapped, muscles may adhere to each other, tendons may become strained and other postural abnormalities may result. ART is a treatment that evaluates the texture tightness and movement of soft tissues. The affected tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with specific patient movements.

What to expect from ART treatment?
ART is a non invasive, very safe treatment that has virtually no harmful side effects. Treatments may feel uncomfortable during the movement phase as the scar tissues or adhesions “break up”. It is common to feel a duplication of your pain symptoms during the treatment. This is a good indication that the problem has been identified. Any discomfort is temporary and subsides almost immediately following treatment. With a success rate of over 90%, ART has become one of the most sought after soft tissue treatments in the world today.

Who is using ART?
The use of ART is becoming more and more wide spread. Many professional sports teams utilize certified ART providers as an integral part of their medical staff. Along with its’ presence on the PGA Tour, ART can be also be found at all Ironman triathlon events. Although used extensively at this high level, certified ART providers can be found in many cities treating athletes of all levels.
